If you're building a new gaming PC right now, stop what you're doing. The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D has just dropped to $429.95 (£388.94) on Amazon with free shipping, which is the lowest price it has been since launch. That alone is worth talking about. But Amazon has also thrown in a free voucher code for Crimson Desert, the open-world action RPG from Pearl Abyss that releases on 19th March.

So you're getting the best gaming CPU on the market and a free game. It's a decent Tuesday.

Why the 9800X3D Is the One to Get

On paper, the specs are solid: 8 cores, 16 threads, a max boost clock of 5.2GHz, and 104MB of combined L2 and L3 cache. But the real story is AMD's 3D V-Cache technology, which stacks additional cache directly on top of the processor die. Games are cache-hungry workloads, and that extra bandwidth makes a measurable difference in frame rates.

What's surprising is where the 9800X3D sits in AMD's own lineup. Despite having the fewest cores among the X3D chips, it trails the pricier 9900X3D by just 300 points on Passmark's gaming benchmark. Three hundred points. For a processor that costs noticeably less. The performance gap between these chips in actual games is, frankly, not worth paying extra for.

CPU Comparison

Gaming doesn't scale well with core count the way video editing or 3D rendering does. Eight cores is more than enough headroom for the games people play today, and the 3D V-Cache does the heavy lifting where it matters most.

The Crimson Desert Bundle

Crimson Desert has been one of the more anticipated PC releases in a while. Pearl Abyss, the studio behind Black Desert Online, has been building this one out for years. It's shaping up to be a visually demanding title, which makes pairing it with a top-tier CPU a sensible move. Whether you're planning to pick it up anyway or hadn't thought about it, getting it free takes the sting out of an already good deal.

The voucher code comes included with the CPU purchase on Amazon. Worth checking the listing for any regional restrictions before you buy.

Worth It?

At $429.95 (£388.94), the Ryzen 7 9800X3D sits in a spot where it's hard to argue against. Intel's top gaming chips cost more and in most gaming benchmarks, they don't keep up. AMD's own higher-tier X3D processors offer diminishing returns for the premium. This chip threads that needle well.

If you've been waiting for a price drop to pull the trigger on a CPU upgrade, this is probably it. Deals like this don't tend to hang around.
