Call of Duty Officially Shuts Down Standalone Zombies Game Rumours

24 February 2026 20:00 PMDon't hold your breath for a standalone Call of Duty: Zombies game. Activision has officially shut down the rumours, and by the sounds of it, it's not something on the cards anytime soon.

It's a bit of a gut punch for the fans who've been pushing for this for years. Zombies has been part of Call of Duty's DNA since Call of Duty: World at War introduced it as Nazi Zombies back in 2008. The co-op mode pits players against relentless, escalating waves of the undead, rewarding teamwork, quick thinking, and the ability to not panic when you're down to your last bullet with a Hellhound breathing down your neck.
Since then, Treyarch has refined and expanded the mode across multiple entries. It's become something of a franchise within a franchise. Fans don't just play Zombies; they follow its lore, theorise about its story, and come back to it long after they've dropped the main multiplayer.
So the idea of a dedicated, standalone release made sense on paper. Give the mode the full spotlight. Build something around it properly. Plenty of people felt it deserved that.
Activision clearly disagrees, at least for now.
No specific reasoning has been given beyond the confirmation itself, which is frustrating. Whether it's a resource issue, a business decision, or they simply don't see the appetite being there in the numbers, we don't know. What we do know is that Zombies will continue to live inside the main Call of Duty releases rather than standing on its own two feet.

For what it's worth, the mode isn't going anywhere. It remains one of the most popular reasons people keep returning to Treyarch's entries specifically. Black Ops 6 included it, the community is still active, and there's no suggestion it'll be cut from future titles.
But a standalone game? Not happening. At least not right now.
