Five million copies. In less than four weeks.

Pearl Abyss has confirmed that Crimson Desert has crossed the 5 million sales mark worldwide, covering PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. "Thank you to every Greymane who has joined us on this journey, experienced the world of Pywel, and supported the game" the studio said. "Reaching this milestone would not have been possible without your support and we are truly grateful."

The numbers tell quite a story. The game sold 2 million copies within its first 24 hours of launch on March 19, then 3 million by March 24, 4 million by April 1, and now sits at 5 million. That's a consistent clip of roughly a million new buyers every week with no sign of tapering off.

What's worth noting is the context around those numbers. The game's Steam reviews started at Mixed, largely due to clunky controls and an interface that seemed allergic to explaining itself. Pearl Abyss didn't just weather that criticism, though. They addressed it at a pace that's genuinely unusual for a big-budget single-player release. Patches came quickly and repeatedly, each one pulling at the loose threads players had flagged. Steam reviews have since climbed to Very Positive, which is a fairly dramatic turnaround.

On the revenue side, analyst Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics estimated (as of early April, when 4 million copies had been sold) that the game had already generated around $200 million across platforms. PS5 alone accounted for roughly $75 million of that. Pearl Abyss reportedly spent approximately 200 billion won ($133 million) and seven years building the thing, so by those numbers, they're already in the black and then some.

The obvious follow-up question is: what next? Pearl Abyss CEO Heo Jin-young has said there are no firm plans for DLC at this stage, and modding support sounds unlikely in any official capacity. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is apparently being looked at, though nothing concrete has been announced. Given the sales curve, it's hard to imagine the studio isn't already thinking seriously about post-launch content, whatever form that might take.
