FX has officially ordered a live-action television series based on Ubisoft's popular Far Cry video game franchise, with Emmy-winning creator Noah Hawley and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob Mac teaming up to bring the first-person shooter series to screens.

The series will follow an anthology format similar to the games themselves, with each season featuring a new setting, cast of characters, and story. Mac, who recently changed his name from Rob McElhenney, will not only executive produce and co-create the series but also star in the show. The series is set to stream on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ internationally.

Hawley, known for his work on Fargo and the upcoming Alien: Earth, explained his attraction to the project. What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it's an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme, Hawley stated. To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens, is a dream come true. I'm excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.

Mac expressed his enthusiasm about collaborating with Hawley, calling it a dream realized. He added that Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created.

FX Entertainment President Nick Grad highlighted the network's strong history with both creators, noting that FX has partnered with Mac and Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television. Grad expressed confidence that the duo will tell the story in a way that is original, gripping and wildly entertaining.

The show will not directly adapt any specific Far Cry game. Instead, it will create original stories within the franchise's universe, similar to how each game in the series presents a standalone narrative in different global locations. The Far Cry games have taken players from tropical islands to the mountains of Nepal, rural Montana, and Cuba, among other exotic locales.

This marks the first live-action Far Cry adaptation for television, though the franchise has been adapted before. A direct-to-video film directed by Uwe Boll was released in 2008 to poor reception, and Netflix produced the animated series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix in 2023.

Since its launch in 2004, the Far Cry franchise has attracted over 100 million unique players across six mainline entries and numerous spinoffs. The most recent entry, Far Cry 6, was released in 2021 and featured Giancarlo Esposito as the villainous dictator Antón Castillo.

This announcement comes as Disney+ enters the increasingly competitive video game adaptation space, joining HBO's The Last of Us, Prime Video's Fallout, Netflix's Arcane, and other successful game-to-series projects that have dominated streaming in recent years.Retry
