16 January 2026 12:00 PMIn Hytale, progress is tied to equipment, and to unlock more advanced Tools, Weapons, and Armour, players need to upgrade their Workbenches or Crafting Stations. So, if players want to move forward in their adventure, they will have to deal with this upgrade sooner or later.
Learn everything about Workbenches and how to upgrade them with this complete guide, which includes tips to get all the materials for the upgrades fast, and which Crafting Stations players should upgrade first.

How To Upgrade Workbenches in Hytale
Interacting with a Workbench or any other Crafting Station (Furnace, Armorer's Workbench, Tanning Rack, Blacksmith's Anvil, etc.) will reveal the Tier of the structure, which starts at Tier 1 and goes up to Tier 3. Except for the Furniture Bench, the Builder's Workbench, and the Chef's Stove which are capped at Tier 1 and do not require upgrades.
Upgrading each Workbench has certain requirements, which are usually linked to the crafting materials used in that particular crafting station. For example, to upgrade the Blacksmith's Anvil to Tier 2, players need 20x Iron Ingots, 30x Light Leather, 30x Linen Scraps, and 15x Venom Sacs.
Which Workbenches to Upgrade First
Ideally, players would want to upgrade the Workbench first, since this grants access to the Backpack Upgrade, and also unlocks higher Tier Tools (Pickaxe, Hatchet, Shovel, etc.). Players should prioritise the Workbench, then the Blacksmith's Anvil, and the Armorer's Workbench.
The Alchemist's Workbench and Arcanist's Workbench are also critical for long-term survival in Hytale, so mind those as well. The Farmer's Workbench is not mandatory to have, but if players want to unlock 100% of the crafting System in the game, they should give some attention to this as well.

Tips for Getting Upgrade Materials Fast
To speed up the material gathering process for Workbench upgrades, players should focus on mining in resource-rich areas and clearing entire ore veins before moving on. Hunting animals in groups is also efficient, as many creatures that drop Leather and other materials spawn together.
Setting up dedicated farming routes through areas with high resource density will help players stockpile materials faster than random exploration. Additionally, planting crops near the base for organic materials saves time in the long run, especially once automated farming is unlocked.
Players should avoid spreading resources too thin across multiple stations. Instead, focus on fully upgrading one station to Tier 3 before moving to the next. This approach ensures maximum effectiveness rather than having multiple partially upgraded stations.
