Oscars 2026: One Battle After Another Wins Big as Sinners Makes History at the 98th Academy Awards

16 March 2026 13:00 PMSunday night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood wrapped up the 98th Academy Awards, and honestly, it delivered. Two films dominated the conversation all evening, and by the end of it, both walked away with genuine moments to celebrate.
One Battle After Another was the night's big winner, taking home six Oscars total. Best Picture, Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson), Best Supporting Actor (Sean Penn), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing (Andy Jurgensen), and Best Casting (Cassandra Kulukundis). That last one is worth flagging on its own.
Best Casting is a brand new category. The first competitive award added by the Academy since Best Animated Feature back in 2001. Kulukundis took home the inaugural trophy, making a bit of history in what was already a strong night for the film.
Sinners, meanwhile, came in with a record-breaking 16 nominations. Sixteen. That surpasses the previous record of 14, shared by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. It did not sweep the way some expected, but four wins is nothing to dismiss. Michael B. Jordan took Best Actor for playing twins in Ryan Coogler's vampire-horror, Autumn Durald Arkapaw won Best Cinematography (the first woman ever to do so), Ludwig Göransson picked up Best Original Score, and Coogler himself won Best Original Screenplay for the first time.
Arkapaw's win deserves a bit more attention. First woman. Ever. In one of the most technically scrutinised categories at the Oscars. That is a long time coming.

Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for Hamnet, playing Agnes Shakespeare in what was a quietly well-regarded performance throughout the awards season. Amy Madigan took Best Supporting Actress for Weapons.
Over in animation, KPop Demon Hunters had a strong showing. Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for "Golden," performed at the ceremony by Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami. That makes it the first KPop song to ever win in that category, full stop.
Frankenstein, nominated nine times, walked away with three wins, all in craft categories: Production Design (Tamara Deverell, Shane Vieau), Costume Design (Kate Hawley), and Makeup and Hairstyling (Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel, and Cliona Furey).
Then there was the tie. Best Live Action Short Film ended with two winners, The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva sharing the award. Only the seventh tie in Oscars history, and the first since 2013.
Conan O'Brien hosted for the second consecutive year, after earning solid reviews for his first stint at the 97th ceremony. He rounded things off with a skit spoofing One Battle After Another's closing scene, which ended with Mr. Beast being named the new eternal Oscars host. Classic O'Brien.
Mr. Nobody Against Putin took Best Documentary Feature, and Sentimental Value won Best International Feature Film.
