28 November 2025 16:30 PM GMTSolo indie developer EVIL CORP GAMES (also known as Skye) has confirmed that Unboxathon will launch on Steam December 8, 2025. The wholesome incremental clicker game blends the tactile satisfaction of Unpacking with the addictive upgrade mechanics of Cookie Clicker, centred around finding your lost childhood plush toy hidden in a vast sea of cardboard boxes.
A free demo has been available on Steam since May, offering access to 2 of the 6 box types and 10% of the full game's content.
The gameplay loop is simple but satisfying: pop bubbles that "bloop" across your screen to earn mystery boxes, cut them open and rustle through packaging materials to discover loot ranging from comfy socks to magical artifacts, then sell your finds to unlock upgrades that improve bubble spawn rates, box quality, and more. The full game features six unlockable box types and an extensive tech tree with dozens of progression options.
The game concept is rather clever considering the massive overlap between gambling and gaming audiences. In the US, 57% of adults gamble annually, whilst in the UK that figure sits around 43-48%. Meanwhile, the gaming industry has embraced "gamblification" through loot boxes and mystery box mechanics, with 71% of desktop gamers now playing titles containing these features. This convergence has proved incredibly lucrative, loot boxes alone generate over $20 billion annually worldwide. The appeal is clear: the same psychological triggers that draw people to gambling, randomised rewards, chance-based outcomes, and the thrill of uncertainty, are now embedded in gaming experiences. With such substantial audiences already primed for chance-based entertainment, a game centred entirely on opening mystery boxes taps directly into established behavioural patterns that span both industries.
Developer Skye began coding at age 11 and previously released The Best Duck Clicker and Grove Fisher in 2024. Unboxathon continues their commitment to creating games that are "cosy, clicky, and cute." Players can wishlist the game on Steam now ahead of its December 8 launch.
