CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed 35 million copies sold worldwide as of November 26, 2025, marking a remarkable comeback for a game that launched to widespread criticism and technical failures.

The milestone was revealed in CD Projekt Red's Q3 2025 earnings report and represents an increase of approximately 5 million units sold since November 2024, when the game crossed the 30 million mark. The figure includes both standalone copies and those bundled in the Ultimate Edition across all platforms.

From Disaster to Redemption

Cyberpunk 2077's journey to 35 million sales is one of gaming's most dramatic turnaround stories. When the game launched in December 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, it was widely panned for being a "buggy mess" with severe performance issues, particularly on last-generation consoles. The backlash was so severe that Sony temporarily removed the game from the PlayStation Store, and CD Projekt Red offered full refunds to disappointed players.

However, the developer committed to fixing the game, reportedly investing over $100 million in patches, updates, and improvements over the following years. The PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC versions eventually received widespread praise, especially after the release of the critically acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion in September 2023.

The game's redemption is perhaps best illustrated by its recent Steam reviews, which have reached a 94% "Very Positive" rating. This represents a dramatic shift from the overwhelmingly negative reception the game received at launch, demonstrating how CD Projekt Red's sustained efforts to improve the game have won over players.

CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski expressed satisfaction with the game's enduring performance: "We are very happy and satisfied with the fact that – despite the passage of time – Cyberpunk 2077 remains such a well performing title and continues to attract new players. Sales of the game have exceeded 35 million copies, which testifies to the franchise's enduring power and enables us to be even more audacious about charting its future."

Nintendo Switch 2 Drives Recent Sales

A significant contributor to the recent 5 million sales boost has been the game's release on Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2025. The Ultimate Edition for Switch 2 includes the Phantom Liberty expansion and features gyro aiming, touchscreen UI commands, mouse support, and cross-progression with other platforms.

Notably, CD Projekt Red's earnings presentation revealed that 75.4% of all Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition copies sold on Nintendo Switch 2 were physical copies, indicating strong retail demand for the portable version. The Switch 2 port utilizes DLSS upscaling technology in four modes across both handheld and docked configurations, though the exact DLSS version has not been disclosed.

The game also launched on macOS in 2025, further expanding its platform availability and contributing to the sales milestone. The 35 million figure represents steady growth for the title, up from 18 million units in April 2022, 20 million in September 2022, 25 million in October 2023, and 30 million in November 2024.

Cyberpunk 2 Development and Continued Support

CD Projekt Red is capitalizing on the success by expanding development on Project Orion, the official sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. According to the earnings report, the team working on Cyberpunk 2 has grown from 116 people in July 2025 to 135 people as of October 2025, with plans to reach 300 developers by 2027. However, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski has stated that the sequel could take "four to five years" to develop from its pre-production start in May 2025.

Details about Cyberpunk 2 remain scarce, though creator Mike Pondsmith has described the new setting as "Chicago gone wrong." Keanu Reeves has reportedly expressed interest in returning for the sequel, asking developers to contact him about the project.

Despite work on the sequel, CD Projekt Red continues to support the original Cyberpunk 2077. Update 2.31, released in collaboration with Virtuos, recently added AutoDrive functionality and new Photo Mode features, demonstrating the developer's ongoing commitment to improving the player experience.

The game's transformation from one of gaming's most infamous launches to a 35-million-selling success story stands as a testament to CD Projekt Red's dedication to redemption and the gaming community's willingness to give second chances when developers genuinely commit to improvement.

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, macOS, and PC.
