4 February 2026 16:30 PMThe wait for HBO's Harry Potter reboot just got a bit more concrete. Casey Bloys, HBO's Chairman and Content CEO, confirmed the series will land in early 2027.
Speaking to Deadline, Bloys said the network has been eyeing 2027 for a while. "I would say, to narrow it down to some extent, early 2027," he explained. When pressed for specifics about whether that means January, February, March or April, Bloys held back. "That we're not ready to say. I'll say early 2027."
Production on season one is expected to wrap this spring , giving the creative teams plenty of time to polish the first eight episodes before launch. The series began filming at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden last summer.

New Cast, New Sound
Young British actor Dominic McLaughlin takes on the role of Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger . These kids won the roles after an exhaustive search involving over 32,000 auditions.
The adult cast reads like a greatest hits of British acting talent. John Lithgow steps into Albus Dumbledore's robes, Janet McTeer plays Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu takes on Severus Snape, and Nick Frost brings Rubeus Hagrid to life . Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse round out the Hogwarts faculty as Quirinus Quirrell and Argus Filch.
Mid-January brought another major announcement. Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer and his Bleeding Fingers Music collective will handle the original score , working alongside composers Kara Talve and Anže Rozman. Following John Williams' legendary work on the films is no small task.
"The musical legacy of Harry Potter is a touch point for composers everywhere and we are humbled to join such a remarkable team on a project of this magnitude ," Zimmer stated. The new score aims to honour what came before whilst reimagining the sound for long-form television.

A Faithful Adaptation
Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes . Both previously worked on Succession, which earned widespread critical acclaim for its sharp writing and direction.
The first season will cover Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in its entirety across eight episodes . This extended runtime allows the show to explore details the films had to cut for pacing. Gardiner and Mylod have described getting a "bigger sandpit to play in" compared to the two-and-a-half-hour theatrical runtime.
The series is planned to run for a decade, adapting all seven books. JK Rowling serves as an executive producer alongside Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films . Heyman produced the original film series, bringing continuity to the franchise's creative vision.
What to Expect
HBO has emphasised this will be a "faithful adaptation" of Rowling's novels. The streaming format provides space for subplots, character development and world-building that the films couldn't fully explore. Fans have long debated which book moments were left on the cutting room floor.
The project shifts away from the Max streaming service. The series will premiere on HBO in the United States and debut in early 2027, available to stream on HBO Max where it's available , including recent launch markets Germany and Italy, plus the UK and Ireland when the platform launches there in late March.
Originally announced back in April 2023, the show has been building momentum through casting announcements and production updates. Bloys' comments mark the most specific release window yet, giving fans a clearer picture of when they'll return to Hogwarts.
No trailer has dropped yet, though that's expected to change later this year as post-production ramps up. For now, Potterheads have confirmation that their long wait is nearly over.
