World of Warcraft Slashes Leveling Experience by 80% in Stealth Patch 11.2.7 Update

1AM Gamer Team
4 December 2025 19:00 PMBlizzard just handed World of Warcraft players one of the biggest leveling gifts in years. And they didn't even bother to mention this change in the patch notes.
Patch 11.2.7 launched this week with all the expected fanfare around Player Housing early access and the new Midnight prologue story. What Blizzard neglected to advertise? A massive 80% reduction to the experience points needed between levels 70 and 80.
Players are now shooting through what used to be a proper grind in no time at all.

The Numbers Tell the Real Story
Data miners at Wowhead spotted the changes buried in the patch files. The reduction scales as you climb higher. Level 70 sees a 74% cut to experience requirements. By the time you're pushing toward 80, that reduction jumps to a staggering 83%.
For context, this is far more aggressive than historical tweaks Blizzard has made to leveling curves. We're talking about slashing through content that previously took hours into something you finish during your lunch break.
Combine this with the 21st anniversary event bonuses (which run until December 7th), and you're looking at experience gains that feel downright silly. The anniversary celebration provides an automatic 20% experience boost. Stack that with the new reduced requirements and you're getting close to half a level just from answering the daily trivia question from Historian Llore.
| Level | Old Experience | New Experience | % Nerfed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 70 → 71 | 225,105 | 58,645 | 73.95% |

| 72 → 73 | 270,190 | 62,045 | 77.04% |

| 74 → 75 | 317,430 | 65,540 | 79.35% |
| 75 → 76 | 341,865 | 67,325 | 80.31% |
| 76 → 77 | 366,835 | 69,130 | 81.16% |
| 77 → 78 | 392,350 | 70,965 | 81.91% |
| 78 → 79 | 418,405 | 72,820 | 82.60% |
| 79 → 80 | 445,000 | 74,700 | 83.21% |
Why Did Blizzard Do This Now?
The timing gives away Blizzard's thinking here. Midnight launches in early 2026, raising the level cap from 80 to 90. Beta testing already shows the new expansion's leveling campaign takes roughly 11 hours to complete.
Getting players caught up before the next expansion hits makes sense. What doesn't make sense is keeping quiet about changes this significant.
Blizzard has done experience reduction passes before major expansions. This time they're getting ahead of the curve, giving players three months to prepare alt armies before Midnight arrives. The new streamlined 70-80 experience also serves another purpose. Returning players who left during earlier patches now have a much smoother on-ramp back into current content.

Players Are Losing Their Minds (In a Good Way)
Legion Timewalking players are reporting absolute madness. The Timewalking content already offered generous experience, but with the new reduction, a single quest turn-in after hitting 70 propels characters up two full levels or more.
You can also snag an additional 250% experience boost at level 70 by speaking with Moratari. That's on top of everything else. Do the maths on that one. You're looking at 650% bonus experience before factoring in any other buffs floating around.
The Turbulent Timeways event that launched alongside Patch 11.2.7 adds even more fuel to the fire. Between anniversary bonuses, the new XP reduction, Warband mentors providing their 25% boost, and special events, leveling alts has never been this effortless.
Some longtime players are calling this the best time to level alts since... well, ever. Others are questioning why Blizzard didn't just announce these changes upfront instead of letting players discover them organically.
What This Means for Your Alts
If you've been sitting on characters stuck in the 70-79 range, now's your moment. Three more days remain on the anniversary event, which wraps December 7th. After that window closes, you'll still benefit from the reduced experience requirements, but you'll lose that juicy 20% anniversary buff.
The real winners here are players preparing for Midnight. Getting multiple characters to 80 before the expansion drops means you're ready to dive straight into the new Quel'Thalas zones the moment servers come online. With the level cap jumping to 90 and an entirely new leveling experience waiting, having your roster sorted ahead of time will pay dividends.
For returning players, this update removes one of the biggest barriers to jumping back in. The 70-80 stretch used to feel like a slog, particularly for players who'd been away and needed to catch up on The War Within content. Now? You're looking at a few hours tops before hitting current content.
The silence from Blizzard about these changes remains puzzling. Major quality-of-life improvements like this typically get splashed across patch notes and promoted heavily. Instead, players had to dig through data files to confirm what they were experiencing in-game.
Whether this was an oversight or intentional remains unclear. What is clear? You should take advantage of this before Blizzard has second thoughts.
