22 March 2026 16:00 PMThree years after Mojang quietly wrapped up support for the original game, Minecraft Dungeons II has been officially announced at Minecraft Live March 2026. A Fall 2026 release window is confirmed. No firm date yet, but it's coming to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2 - and it'll be on Game Pass from day one.
Worth noting: this isn't a solo effort. The sequel is co-developed by Mojang and Double Eleven, the studio behind the original Minecraft Dungeons.
The Steam page description sets the tone pretty well. "A hero's work is never done! Disorder is brewing, and the world stands before a threat unlike any other. A new danger is growing in power, ready to descend upon the land and unleash mayhem." So, a new villain, new locations, and the promise of loot - lots of it. You'll be able to share it with up to three friends as you co-operate to save a world in crisis.
That four-player co-op carry-over from the original is a big deal for a lot of people who played the first game with family or mates.
From Cult Hit to Sequel
The original Minecraft Dungeons launched in May 2020 and didn't exactly set the charts alight straight away - landing 15th in that month's top sellers. But over time, players drifted toward its Diablo-style loop, and Mojang kept feeding it with free updates, crossplay support, and a string of paid expansions.
Then, in 2023, development stopped. Mojang signed off with a note to fans saying the project had "exceeded our wildest dreams" and had reached 25 million players. That felt like an ending. Dungeons received its final update in 2023, leaving the community wanting more.
Turns out they got it.
The game, which carries the internal codename "Spicewood," had been the subject of rumours and leaks for some time before the official reveal. So the announcement wasn't a total shock to those paying attention, but seeing it confirmed is a different thing entirely.
There's still no gameplay footage. No release date beyond "Fall 2026." Mojang is keeping things tight for now, so what the sequel actually looks like in motion remains to be seen. Given the gap since the last game, expectations have had time to grow - and so have the things people felt the original fell short on.
For those who want to get ahead of it, Minecraft Dungeons II is available to wishlist on Steam now.
