Creepers in real life. That's where we are now.

Mojang Studios and Merlin Entertainments officially announced Minecraft World during Minecraft Live March 2026 today, a £50 million (around $70 million) theme park land set to open in 2027 at Chessington World of Adventures in Greater London. It's the first time the best-selling video game of all time is getting a major theme park of its own, and honestly, it's been a long time coming.

The park will pull directly from the game itself. Think iconic biomes, mobs you'll recognise instantly, block-built playscapes, and a Nether-themed dining area. No, it's not based on A Minecraft Movie or its upcoming 2027 sequel. Mojang was clear about that. This is a park built around how people actually play Minecraft.

"Minecraft World represents a meaningful milestone in our ongoing journey to expand the Minecraft universe" said Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Senior Creative Director of Entertainment at Minecraft. "We're thrilled to have partnered with Merlin Entertainments to realise a place where you can literally be in the Minecraft Overworld and have an adventure of your own with your family and friends."

What to Expect

Confirmed attractions so far include a world-first Minecraft roller coaster (reportedly Nether-themed), interactive adventures, block-built playscapes, and the biggest Minecraft retail store ever built. Themed dining is also on the cards, which the Merlin team admitted has led to some "interesting conversations" about what you'd actually eat there. Fair point.

There's also a floating island planned for the middle of the land. Angela Jobson, SVP of Global Brand at Merlin, admitted they're still figuring out the engineering on that one. "There are some features in that land that I'm still not quite sure how we're even doing it from an engineering perspective" she said. "It's going to look quite spectacular."

Minecraft World Construction Site

A selection of iconic Minecraft creators will also be involved in the build process to make sure the whole thing feels authentic to the community, not just a corporate tick-box exercise.

Chessington itself is a 35-minute direct train ride from London Waterloo, so it's accessible enough for a day trip. It already has a zoo, aquarium, and resort hotel on-site, so it's not a bad shout for families looking to make a full weekend of it.

Video Games and Theme Parks

Minecraft World will be the first major park land dedicated to Mojang's game, but video game IP at theme parks isn't new. Nintendo set the benchmark with Super Nintendo World, which now runs parks in Japan, the US, and beyond, with Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong attractions. Universal Studios has also done well with haunted houses based on Five Nights at Freddy's, Fallout, and The Last of Us for Halloween Horror Nights.

What makes Minecraft interesting as a theme park subject is exactly what makes it hard to adapt. There's no fixed story, no single world, no main character. Every player's experience is different. Whether Merlin and Mojang pull that off in a physical space will be the real test when doors open in 2027.
