The Baba Yaga returns. Saber Interactive announced a new AAA game based on the John Wick franchise during Sony's State of Play showcase , bringing Keanu Reeves back to reprise his iconic character's look and voice .

This marks the first proper AAA treatment for the billion-dollar action franchise. Yeah, we're thinking this is a big deal.

Working Title, Real Ambition

The game currently carries the placeholder name "Untitled John Wick Game" and is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC . No release date yet. Saber's keeping those cards close for now.

The developer earned serious credibility with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, which sold over seven million units in its first year . That success apparently changes everything about how the studio approaches projects. Their track record suggests they know how to handle brutal, visceral action.

Fight Scene

Gun-Fu Meets Gaming

The game will feature an original narrative set years before the Impossible Task , exploring a chapter of Wick's life that predates his retirement. Director Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves are both involved in production , lending authenticity to the project.

What does that mean for gameplay? Saber promises a hard-hitting gun-fu combat system, jaw-dropping camerawork, intense driving experiences, and cinematic storytelling . Think less button-mashing, more balletic violence. The kind where a pencil becomes a weapon of mass destruction.

The trailer showcased Wick getting fitted for one of his bulletproof suits while cutting between combat sequences. One particular scene showed him battering enemies with a frying pan in a Chinese restaurant kitchen. Classic Wick behaviour.

Not The First John Wick Game

John Wick Hex

Before this announcement, John Wick had one official game to his name. John Wick Hex, a real-time tactical role-playing game developed by Bithell Games, was the franchise's only official game and featured iconic characters from the movies . That game took a chess-like approach to Wick's violence.

Bad timing though. John Wick Hex was removed from sale on July 17, 2025 , likely due to licensing issues. Players who bought it before delisting can still play it. Those who missed out? Tough luck.

The contrast between Hex and this new project is stark. Hex was thoughtful, tactical, cerebral. This new game appears to lean into raw, adrenaline-fueled action, closer to what fans actually see on screen.

Making Players Feel Like Wick

Saber's goal is to create an immersive experience that blurs the line between movies and video games . That's a tall order. The John Wick films work because of their meticulous choreography, practical stunts, and Reeves' commitment to the physical demands.

The game will expand on the franchise's lore with familiar characters fans already know, as well as compelling new ones created specifically for this production . Translation: expect cameos from the Continental crew alongside fresh faces.

Gameplay

Saber's approach involves building rich, neo-noir environments that contribute to creating a thrilling experience, focusing on fine details and iconography present throughout various locations . The films succeeded partly because of their world-building. The game needs to nail that same atmosphere.

What Makes This Different

The John Wick franchise has earned over $1 billion worldwide across four films. The universe includes the television series The Continental and the spinoff film Ballerina starring Ana de Armas . New films are in development too.

But games based on films typically disappoint. They rush to market, rely on brand recognition over quality, and fail to capture what made the source material special. Saber's involvement with Stahelski and Reeves suggests a different approach. Lionsgate's Matthew Karch called it "a true collaboration to bring the world of Wick to life in a AAA game" .

The question is whether Saber can translate the John Wick experience into something interactive without losing what makes it work. The films thrive on Reeves' physicality and the stunt team's precision. Games require player agency, which often conflicts with cinematic presentation.

The Road Ahead

No release window exists yet. Saber's wishlisting the game on all platforms but staying quiet about launch timing. That could mean years of development remain.

Saber Interactive is best known for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, which earned nominations for Best Action Game and Best Multiplayer at The Game Awards . Their portfolio includes World War Z, Evil Dead: The Game, and various other action titles. They understand violence in games.

Whether they understand John Wick's specific brand of violence remains to be seen. The trailer looked polished, but trailers always do. Gameplay will determine if this becomes the definitive Wick experience or another forgotten licensed game.

For now, fans can wishlist and wait. The Baba Yaga returns when he's ready.
